Will Writing Service

A professionally written will is the simplest way to make sure your money, property and possessions go to the people you choose. At UK Wills and Trusts we write bespoke wills for individuals and couples across the UK, built around your family, your assets and your wishes.

Why you need a will

If you die without a valid will, your estate is shared out under the intestacy rules rather than your wishes. Unmarried partners and stepchildren can be left with nothing automatically, and your family may face extra cost, delay and stress sorting out your affairs.

A will lets you:

  • Choose exactly who inherits your estate and in what shares
  • Appoint guardians for children under 18
  • Name executors you trust to deal with your estate
  • Leave specific gifts, such as family heirlooms or gifts to charity
  • Plan ahead to reduce the Inheritance Tax your family may have to pay
  • Set up trusts to protect assets for children, vulnerable beneficiaries or a surviving partner

Our will writing service

Every will we prepare is tailored to you. We can help with:

  • Single wills – for individuals with straightforward or complex estates
  • Mirror wills – matching wills for couples who want to leave everything to each other and then to the same beneficiaries
  • Wills with trusts – including property protection and discretionary trusts (see our family trusts service)
  • Updating an existing will – after marriage, divorce, a new child, buying property or other life changes

How it works

  1. Free consultation – we talk through your family, assets and wishes.
  2. Drafting – we prepare your will and explain it in plain English.
  3. Review – you check the draft and we make any changes.
  4. Signing – we guide you through signing correctly so your will is legally valid.

Making sure your will is valid

In England and Wales a will must be made in writing by someone aged 18 or over with the mental capacity to make it. It must be signed in the presence of two independent witnesses, who also sign it. A witness, or their spouse or civil partner, cannot benefit from the will. We take care of these details so your wishes can be carried out.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I update my will?

We recommend reviewing your will every few years, and always after a major life event. In England and Wales, getting married or entering a civil partnership normally cancels an existing will, so it is important to make a new one.

Can I write my own will?

You can, but DIY wills are easy to get wrong. Mistakes with wording or witnessing can make a will invalid or lead to disputes. A professionally written will gives you confidence that your wishes will be followed.

What else should I consider alongside my will?

Many clients also set up a Lasting Power of Attorney, consider a trust, or plan their funeral in advance. Find out more about our estate planning services.
